FOUNDER OF ASCENDENT DEVICE STRATEGIES

FOUNDER

Kevin Mathews is the principal of Ascendant Device Strategies. He has spent his entire career in commercial roles in the medical device space, spanning a wide variety of devices that diagnose and treat patients in multiple medical subspecialities.

Most recently, Kevin was at Acutus Medical, a manufacturer of electrophysiology mapping and ablation products, where he ran global sales, including managing direct teams in the US and western Europe and managing a channel partner for central Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia, and South America.

Prior to Acutus, Kevin was at Philips where he ran corporate accounts and US commercial operations for a 550-person sales team and integrated the $2B acquisition of Spectranetics— driving greater than $1B a year in revenue in categories including in coronary and peripheral interventions, atherectomy devices, drug-eluting balloons, and cardiac lead extraction.

Kevin joined Philips as part of the acquisition of Volcano Corp in 2015, a manufacturer of devices for coronary and peripheral interventions. At Volcano, he held a variety of global sales, marketing, business development, and partner management roles, culminating in the $1.2B acquisition by Philips.

Earlier in his career, Kevin worked in medical device consulting in KPMG’s healthcare practice. He also worked at DeRoyal with sales and marketing responsibility in categories including custom procedural trays, orthopedic braces, and wound care, culminating with a three-year expat role in Europe with responsibility for marketing and partner management.

Along the way, Kevin has built award-winning teams, has taken market share, and has won President’s Club multiple times.

Over his 30 years in devices, Kevin has been part of a full range of company types—from privately held to publicly traded companies; from commodity, high volume disposables, to highly specialized medical devices, to state-of-the-art medical capital. In this capacity, he’s had the ability to see what good looks like (and what not-so-good looks like). His career passion is twofold: to bring life-changing technology to patients who need it, and to drive commercial organizational competency, effectiveness, and success.

Kevin holds a BA in economics from the University of Tennessee and an MBA from Emory University.
